Memorial Day~

Have a Blessed Memorial Day.

May the joys of today
Be those of tomorrow
And the goblets of life
Hold no dregs of sorrow.
May God give you...
For every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,
For every care, a promise,
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.
May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

scolding and chattering~

You should hear the ruckus I listen to in the morning as the sun comes up and the squirrels make their way to the deck in the morning to check out the bird feeders.  Constant scolding and chattering over who gets to be there first.

It's usually this gal who wins out ... she seems to be the dominate one.  It's the fat little momma red squirrel.

Remember her from one of my prior post ~ the big fat pregnant one ~ looking like she was ready to burst.

She must have a nest of little ones that she's attending to now.  She gets to the feeder... chases off the bigger gray squirrels... eats and she's on her way.

I have quite the mixtures of squirrels this year.  Red squirrels, gray squirrels, black squirrels and a cross between the grays and black.

The black squirrel though is camera shy.  I tried and tried this morning to get a shot of it; but it just refused to come close enough.  So I turned on the zoom on my camera and got these shots:

Then I noticed another squirrel that seems to be a mix of the black and gray squirrel:

After they settled down a bit and realized that I wasn't a threat to them they came in closer.  I guess hungry for some sun flower seeds over rode their fear.

Even the black squirrel overcame his fear of me and came sneaking up the steps to check things out:

Also... bonus shot ~ Mr or Mrs mud turtle was out on the rocks.  How do you tell the sex of a turtle??  Sara calls it Norman ... so I guess it's a Mr.  I picked him up to take a look; but couldn't see anything... lol... and then it peed on me.  So now I'm in agreement with Sara.... it's a Mister.

I felt kinda sorry for Norman ... having to live in the mud and the sludge of the black lagoon with no fresh water... sooooooooooooooooo~

When Sara and Don came over last evening I had them help me get it cleaned.

My waterfall is now up and functioning again and the black lagoon has fresh water.

I love how the sun reflects off the water in this pic:
At the top of my waterfall feature is an old cistern hand pump that used to be on the old farmstead we once lived at:

It's a piece of Slim's heritage ~ his great grandparents I'm sure pumped many a buckets of water with it.

This old blue heron is one of my little treasures.  He's heavy ... I'm not sure what he's made of ~ I believe cast iron.

Look at my poppies!  I'm sure by the end of the day they'll be opening up.  Just in time for Memorial Day weekend!!

Until next time...
So it goes in my neck of the woods.

Friday

recovery time~

I'm happy to report that Sam's gallbladder removal surgery went well.   He had two big stones, one the size of an egg and another the size of a golf ball and a hundred little ones like gravel.  The doctor was surprised he didn't have more trouble with it than he did.  He's spending a few days now at my place for some TLC ... but I think the real reason is because Mom has central air and a big TV. lol

As I said on yesterdays post ~ the guys went fishing one more time before Sam had to go under the knife this morning ... and they caught a nice meal of walleye.  Or... I should say Sam caught a meal of walleye.  He skunked his Dad.  Slim caught a few small mouth bass; but had to put them back because season isn't open yet on them.  They weren't that big of fish; but big enough for the frying pan.  Just the right eating size as far as I'm concerned.

I heard a big splash this morning down by the black lagoon (my rubbermaid tub that I have sunk in the ground at the bottom of my waterfall ~ which isn't up and running yet).
Seems a mud turtle has taken up residency.  Every year I have mud turtles come and visit the black lagoon ... they like to eat my goldfish and koi.  Well... so far I have no fish because I gave them to my daughter Staci for her pond and just planned on buying some new ones this year; but now with that big mud turtle in there I think I might just change my mind on buying goldfish or koi.  I think I'll let the turtle stay if he likes and just put some minnows in it for him to eat.

I really need to get that tub cleaned out and get my waterfall going.  I think the turtle would really like it then... although it does seem pretty content with it the way it is right now.

Never a dull moment around here.

Until next time...
So it goes in my neck of the woods.

Thursday

sit a spell~

Come sit a spell ~ enjoy some time with me out on the deck ~

Some days there are just no words for what a person feels or goes through.

My daughter and her coworkers are helping out an elderly woman who is going through some financial hardship right now.  Sara called me wondering if I still had an extra bed frame; which by the grace of another good friend whom I got it from ... I did ... and I also had an extra box spring and mattress for her.  So Sara and Don came over to pick that up.

Slim and I went over and helped Sam plant the rest of his garden before he has to have his surgery in the morning.  He already had the onions and tomatoes in.  We helped him plant the carrots, radishes, lettuce, dill, spinach and cucumbers.

We were going to go fishing this evening; but Sam literally begged to go along ... so I gave up my boat seat for him to go with his Dad.  I hope all goes well and he can handle it okay.

Sam just said he wanted to try it; because after tomorrow he won't be able to go for a couple weeks ... so I gladly relinquished my seat.  There was plenty of room in the boat still if I had wanted to go along; but I had a hot shower waiting for me after getting all dirty from going barefoot in the garden, laundry out on the clothes line that needed to be brought in and tended to and a sink full of dishes with my name all over them... a lawn of new grass seeding to hose down and a dog that needed to be fed and watered.

Until next time...
So it goes in my neck of the woods.

postponed~

Just got word that Sam's surgery is being postponed until Friday!  They're sending him home with a load of pain meds to get him through while they rebook his surgery.  Apparently, the surgery department is over booked.   Let's just hope he doesn't have another major attack between now and then.

Will post more later ... I have a hungry crew to go make some lunch for.

sweet dreams~

My son, Sam ... is having gall bladder surgery tomorrow morning.  I pray it all goes well and he has nothing but sweet dreams of bees while he's under and during his recovery.

Life sure does know how to toss out a curve ball once in awhile.

Friday

bloomers~

Just thought I'd share some of my pretty posies with you :)

It's predicted a high into the 90's by the end of the weekend and early next week ~ what a difference of only a few weeks ago when we were still in the the upper 20's.  Our weather here in Wisconsin can really make some drastic changes ~ fast !  I have to go and water the lawn where we put down some new seed to fill in some patchy spots.  I'd hate to have it dry out on me before it even sprouts. lol

My flower beds are starting to perk up with new life ... including some rotten nasty quack grass that needs to be tended to.  Any quack grass pullers out there that need some practice time???

I think too, I'm going to whip up a batch of homemade bread and some dinner rolls today when my little helper Bailey (my youngest grandbabe who's 4 years old) gets here today.  She'll enjoy that.  She always says it's like play dough making bread with Grandma.

Until next time...

Thursday

update~

Just thought I'd pop in and let everyone know that I'm doing okay.

I had to undergo the cardiac PET/CT scan and get a little more radiation into me ... but; good news ... no changes in my heart function since January.  The doctor said he didn't want to do the angiogram now because I've had too much radiation exposure as it is.   I'm gonna be glowing like a lightning bug pretty soon!  I think I'll have to undergo another angiogram though in six months.

Sooooooooo.......... it's an all thumbs up again!!

Until next time...

Sunday

twittertated~

I have a little purple finch out in the yard today who is twittertated ~ he's smitten by a little female and he just can't seem to keep her attention.  He's been singing up a storm and dancing for his lady.  He flew from tree to tree and back to this same branch ... every time doing a little jig for over an hour.

Only bad thing is I don't know what's up with my camera ~ because I couldn't get a clear picture; but I snapped off a few shots of him flirting anyways:

I also have a very pregnant red squirrel by my place ... she's already been twittertated... lol ... poor gal ... she looks like she's ready to burst.

Yes! Spring is still in the air.
~~~
I have an appointment in the morning with my cardiologist.  Wish me luck!  Hopefully, there will be some questions answered ~ because my health has been on a downhill spiral and I'm not too happy with the way I've been feeling.  It's spring time...and summer is right on it's tail ... and I have things to do before it starts to snow again!!
Sara and Don spent the afternoon with me and helped around the house and yard a bit ~ boy ... did I appreciate that.  Thanks kids... you're the best!!  As are my other daughter Staci and her hubby Paul, my grandloves ~ Amanda, Brooke & Bailey ... my son Sam and his girl friend Ashley and my Dear Hubby, Slim ... ALL of you have been sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo supportive over these last few years since I've been battling this.  I know it hasn't been easy on any of us ... but we're a tough bunch and persevere.
Mom came over and she's always so supportive and is always wanting to do something for me too ... but gosh... isn't it suppose to be the other way around???  I'm the one who should be helping her ... and I'm the one who should be there for my kids ...  and hubby ... and family... seriously... it really really sucks not to feel good.
Some days I just get into such a slump.... yuck... yuck...yuck.
Brighter note ... I had the best ever phone conversation with my sister in Texas this weekend ... I saw my sister and brother-in-law from Michigan ... another sister came and helped with a major project that needed tending to and my brother came over and took me for a truck ride through some back roads and I had a great visit with ALL.
Thank you Lord for such a wonderful family and the best friends ever!! ... and that includes ALL my friends that I've met in cyberspace.  Thanks for blogging with me ~ I LOVE and APPRECIATE you too!!
Until next time...
Friday
what to do~
As you know, my daughter is getting married in August and it's going to be an outside wedding in our back yard.  (Oh please Lord, give us beautiful weather)
Last night they finished up their invitations and the plans are coming together ... BUT
There is a little problem ~ or it could be a problem and I just don't know how to address it.
The problem is this ~ one of the guest that will be invited has this little dog that she takes every where with her.  I don't mind her dog (sometimes) ... as long as it's at her place ... and not jumping up on MY table or trying to hump my leg or chewing on my furniture ... but ... when she brings her dog to my house it runs all over the place ...  it's a barker ... gets into stuff ... scratches around and runs through my flower beds and that I have a problem with.  When her dog gets barking ... then my dog thinks it has to be a barker too ... and then everyone is telling the dogs to shut up and that ... I don't like.
I know if I say something to her she'll say that she'll keep the dog in the vehicle during the wedding ceremony ... and I know that won't work out either; because it'll still be barking and wanting out and then my dog will be barking and YIKES!!!! How do I approach her on the issue??  I don't want to hurt feelings; but I really don't want her to bring her dog or dogs to the wedding ... but I want her and her husband to come.
How do I approach her on the issue without causing bad feelings?
PLEASE ... I'm open for suggestions!
Until next time...
So it goes in my neck of the woods.
rooney tips ~
I received this in an email and just had to share... it just might be worth trying!   It's an old email ~ as you'll see when it starts talking about the price of postage; but none the less ... I still think it has some pretty good ideas in it.
Andy Rooney
Tips for Handling Telemarketers
Three Little Words That Work !!
(1)The three little words are: "Hold On, Please..."
Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming that boiler room sales would grind to a halt.
Then when you eventually hear the phone company's "beep-beep-beep" tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task.
These three little words will help eliminate telephone soliciting.
(2) Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end?
This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone.
This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a "real" sales person to call back and get someone at home.
What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, is to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as possible. This confuses the machine that dialed the call and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your name in their system any longer !!!
(3) Junk Mail Help:
When you get "ads" enclosed with your phone or utility bill, return these "ads" with your payment. Let the sending companies throw their own junk mail away.
When you get those "pre-approved" letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the return envelope.
Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right? It costs them more than the regular 37 cents postage "IF" and when they receive them back.
It costs them nothing if you throw them away! The postage was around 50 cents before the last increase and it is according to the weight. In that case, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool little, postage-paid return envelopes.
One of Andy Rooney's (60 minutes) ideas.
Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express. Send a pizza coupon to Citibank. If you didn't get anything else that day, then just send them their blank application back!
If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't on anything you send them.
You can even send the envelope back empty if you want to just to keep them guessing! It still costs them 39 cents.
The banks and credit card companies are currently getting a lot of their own junk back in the mail, but folks, we need to OVERWHELM them. Let's let them know what it's like to get lots of junk mail, and best of all they're paying for it...Twice!
Let's help keep our postal service busy since they are saying that e-mail is cutting into their business profits, and that's why they need to increase postage costs again. You get the idea!
If enough people follow these tips, it will work ---- I have been doing this for years, and I get very little junk mail anymore.
mom's day~
Happy Mother's Day to ALL you wonderful mothers!!
Friday
the unexpected~
As you know, yesterday my daughter and I were heading out on a road trip to find her a wedding dress.  Before our little road trip there has been some disappointment as far a dress goes.  She had ordered one online a few weeks back... and it didn't work out.
Now I was very hesitant about her doing this; ordering online ... but... it's her wedding... she found "the dress" and there really wasn't any stopping her.  The company where she had ordered the dress from was fast.  She received her dress only 3 days after ordering it.  It was as pretty as she was hoping for ~ only way too small ... and in my opinion ... not her style at all.  Needless to say, the dress needed to be returned ~ and our bride to be went into a very sad mode.  Then to top it off ... the gal that she's been trying to book for her music hasn't returned any of her phone calls and messages and that's not looking to be a good sign either.
Sara and I had taken several trips already out of town to find wedding apparel ~ to no avail.   The bridesmaid dress was found, the flowers for decoration have been found, the guest book, the mother of the bride dress and shoes but still no wedding gown.
Sara works at the bank during the week so it's been hard for her to get away ... and her day's off seem to fly by way to fast.  None the less... we said 2 weeks ago... no matter what... next days off... we're out of here and we won't stop until we find THE DRESS.
Well... that day was yesterday.
We decided to head down to the town of Wausau, a two and half hour drive south of us.  You see.... that's another MAJOR problem of our location ... we literally live in the sticks... and you have to drive several hours in any direction before you can do any kind of shopping.  It's a 45 minute drive for us just to go to Walmart ~ let alone find a decent bridal gallery or any store that sells formal wear.
We got a late start yesterday.  It was around 9:00 a.m. when we left the house.  So... all things go good we'll be in Wausau by 11:30.
Only 20 minutes into our trip we get behind a semi trailer that we have to follow for several miles before passing.  Sara is frustrated.  Then we get behind this guy that is driving 25 mph in a 55 mph zone and end up following him for several miles.  Sara says, "if this is going to be any indicator of how my day is going to be; I'm turning around right now" and believe me ... my little bridezilla meant it.  It was scary... I was thinking to myself ... hmmm... maybe we should turn around ... Sara really didn't seem "into" this trip and I had such a feeling it was going to be a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnng long day.
An hour into the drive ... before the turn off to go to Wausau is a turn that goes to the town of Rhinelander.  I suggested to my little bridezilla daughter that maybe we should take a drive into Rhinelander first before heading any further south.  Let's get mom a coffee ~ 'cuz she was really needing one ... lol.
As we pull into town ... there on the left hand side of the road is a sign saying Lund and Taylor Bridal Gallerie in front of this old victorian style shop.  Let's stop! Take a quick look ~~~ you never know.  Sara agrees.
That gal in the shop asks Sara what her style is that she's looking for.  Sara tells her and off she goes grabbing these dresses off the rack.  ALL of them are nothing like Sara said.... Sara mentions it to her.  The gal says, "oh that's okay... I've been doing this for years, I know your style.  Just humor me and your Mom here and try this on."  OH MY GOSH ... I'm thinking  ... lady... you don't know my daughter and you just opened up yourself a can of whoop ass.
Well... the very first dress she put on ... was it!!!  She came out of that dressing room, beaming the biggest smile I think I've ever seen on her face.  It was priceless!!  She found THE DRESS.
She tried on about 10 more ~ just to be sure ~  but kept going back to dress number 1 ... my baby found her dress!! AND it was only 11:00 in the morning ... we didn't have to drive all the way to Wausau ... she also got her veil there, and jewelry and a little jacket ... wow... a trip down the street and she had her shoes and a new bra and it wasn't even noon.  This momma is now smiling!!
I hate shopping ... but yesterday was actually one of the best shopping days I've ever had.
Until next time...
So it goes in my neck of the woods.
Thursday
road trip again~
My daughter  and I are hitting the road ...
and we're not coming home until she finds her wedding dress!
She has been shopping and SHOPPING and this time Mommas goin' with and HOPEFULLY she'll find THE DRESS.
I got a feeling it's going to be a LONNNNNNNNNNNNG day. lol
Here's a pic of Sara and her soon to be hubby, Don ... clowning around for the camera.
Oh yeah... Sam had to get his picture in there too in the back ground.  I call it, "where's waldo?"
Until next time...
Tuesday
flowers~
Yes, I'm still at it!
My new found hobby is consuming me ~ at least this is a hobby that doesn't require much physical activity and my heart can handle it ... most of the time.  Although, I must confess ... my ticker has been acting up again and it doesn't seem to take much of any kind of activity to trigger a need for me to be popping nitro pills like tic tacs ... bummer... I'm not too happy about that.  BUT... I'm NOT going to let it get me down.  Just so I can stay out of the hospital ... I'll be happy.  I hate taking nitro though ... it gives me such horrible headaches.
These last couple of days I made up some more bloomers for THE CAKE.  I'll let you know about that later on ... ahhhh ... the suspense!
I wanted to try my hand at some little roses.  Here's what I came up with:
I think they look more like a little gardenia or double impatients ~ but I still think they'll look nice as a decoration on THE CAKE
I also made up some more little ~ what I'm calling filler flowers ~ and tried my hand at some leaves:
I was very happy too with the way these orchids turned out ~ they look a lot more fragil and delicate in person.  Some how it seems like the camera makes them look thick to me.  Just like me in front of a camera ... I always look thicker than what I want myself to look. lol
~~~~~
I had some visitors to the yard this morning:

Three cottontail rabbits.  All I know is they better behave and stay away from my flower beds and be content to eat the clover and dandelions in the yard ~ or else.  I put milorganite out around my flowers and so far they haven't touched anything ... that I can see.  So hopefully, the milorganite is doing it's job.

Until next time...
So it goes in my neck of the woods.
