pileated woodpecker ~

Just thought I'd share some pics from the yard today ~ such as this big ol' pileated woodpecker.

I was on the phone at the time with my sister Dar and I was snapping off these pictures through the window.  I was surprised they had even turned out ~ especially through my dirty window!

This next picture ~  it's not the clearest but it really shows how large these birds are.  That tree that it's on is about 10 feet away from the deck where the thistle feeder is hanging that the finches are on.

Notice too... all that snow we still have!!!

Until next time ...
So it goes in my neck of the woods.

  1. Love the wild life pictures you post. What you mean snow, didn't you know it was SPRING!

Just so you will know we are 5 miles north of Coosawhatchie, SC. If this posts it will be a miracle and I will call the Pope. The old and new one!!!

This system has been on and off. It has eaten three comments.

  7. Great photos. We get them once in a while, and they are some huge birds, especially when their wings cast a shadow as they fly overhead.

  9. I have a couple that visit too, they love the suet, especially when I get the woodpecker blend. I'm thinking about getting the feeder with the tail support for them.

  10. this was worth ending our phone call. The Pileated Woodpecker is still one of my favorite noise-makers. They sure can leave a pile of rotted wood chips under a tree digging for those grubs. Great shots, Mel.
