more mushrooms ~

After being gifted with the mushrooms yesterday ~ Dear Hubby and I got the itch to get out in the woods and search for some wild Honey Mushrooms.

It didn't take us long ... about a half hour of picking (because we got rained out) and we had some nice ones in the buckets ...

... another hour of meticulous cleaning ~ it takes me longer to clean them then pick them ...

... and I now have a bus pan full of mushrooms to put up.  O Happy Day!

I also have a few tomatoes left from the garden that are calling my name to be turned into salsa today. I still have about the same amount out in the garden yet to pick.  So far this year I have put up 20 pints of salsa, 28 quarts of stewed tomatoes with celery, peppers and onions and 28 quarts of regular canned tomatoes.  Truth be told ... I'm getting a little tired of tomatoes :) ... but sure do love the taste and convenience of having them to just snag off the pantry shelf in the middle of winter.

Just thought I'd share a couple more pics from yesterday ... these are two old hunting shacks in the woods where we were picking mushrooms.  I can only imagine the stories their walls could tell if they could talk.

Some day ... at some point in time ... some young fellow built these.  I imagine his place ~ away from home ~ where he was able to find refuge from the weather while out hunting to put food on the table for his family.  I wonder if he picked mushrooms in the fall?

Have a wonderful day!

Until next time ...
So it goes in my neck of the woods.

  1. Wow, Mel, you did get a panful of mushrooms...I missed the boat. Those were some fine looking clumps I found., but are long gone bad by now.
Come on over, show us what to pick.

  2. Like those old hunting shacks. I like mushrooms but don't know a thing about them.

  3. I had no idea those were safe to eat! WE use to pick fall mushrooms downstate; they were called sheeps head or cauliflower. They were SOOOO tasty!

  4. WoW, Mel! What workers you and Slim are. We have lots of mushrooms here in the mountains but I have no clue which ones to pick. You are admired from down here in the south. Loved those old shacks too. Good place to get out of the weather while hunting.

  5. I wish I knew more about which mushrooms are safe to eat. Those look like the ones that we picked in Illinois with Thom's cousin a couple of years ago. He called then 'stumpies.' Do enjoy!
