blueberries ~

We took a little drive this morning ... to go picking some high bush blueberries.  We headed down to Nelson's Berry Farm in Westboro.  On the way we stopped over and picked up Mom to go along.  She has never in her 83 years picked high bush blueberries (with the exception of the handful she had gotten off of my bushes we have planted in the garden).  My plants are young; but hopefully in the next few years will start to produce like the one's at Nelsons.    Mom has picked the little wild ones many times in her life; but never something like these.

I think she really enjoyed herself :)

She kept saying she wished Dad could have done this before he died; because she knows he really would have enjoyed doing this too.  awww ... that he would.  My Dad was crippled and had to walk with two canes ... yet he would go out in the woods and literally crawl on his belly to pick wild blueberries.  I just regret we were never able to take him here.

Dear Hubby, Slim, filled up this bucket off of just this one bush.

When we were done for the morning we had picked seven ice cream pails heaping full.  That ought to be enough to hold us over for jam and a few pies.

The containers were full ... yet Mom kept going back for more!  She was holding them by the handful up against her shirt.  She was just like a little kid in a candy store. lol

She's already talking about picking again next year.

She's got my vote ... she picked three pails full in the time it took me to do two.  But then again, she wasn't running around snapping off pictures and trying to get out of picking like I was :)

Until next time ...
So it goes in my neck of the woods.

  3. I remember picking 'wild' high bush cranberries in a park in upstate New York. Great fun, only the bushes were located in the middle of a gazillion biting ant hills! Lot of fancy stepping going on that day. :)

  7. Mom was so excited this afternoon when she told me how she spent her morning....she said, " Betcha can't guess what I was doing this morning!" I haven't heart that much excitement in her voice in quite some time. Thanks for taking her along. And you are right about Dad! He could even have used his scooter down those paths. WoW, beautiful berries.
Do you know how much longer they will be open? I'm going.
