back to reality - again~

Well it's back to reality again ~ but just for the night ... then I'm out of here again.
Dear Hubby still has some vacation time to burn; so we are spending most of our time further north of here, up by our cabin.  I came home today to catch up on some laundry, replenish some groceries and of course to get my fix.  My fix is this! The internet ... oh how I miss being online when I can't do it.  I've become an internet junkie.  But... I have to admit ~ staying at the cabin without any phone and sometimes without power is relaxing.  I've done more reading in the past week than I have in a month at home and I'm even crocheting a scarf.

We've been riding around on a lot of back roads ~ just checking things over... looking for boughs to cut, partridge to hunt, deer or moose signs and beaver dams to trap and photo ops for me.

When I say back roads ... I'm not just talking off the black top asphalt.  Here's what I've been looking at through the window:

Driving these old logging roads in the middle of nowhere land is what we've been doing all week ~ no plush resort with a white sand beach for us on our little vacation.  Sometimes when we're out in the woods walking around I often wonder how some of my 'city slicker' friends would manage a week with Slim and I cruising the terrain.

Here's another shot of the big boy coming through some brush ... lol

Notice his high rubber boots ... well sometimes he just has to get into the water to check things out.

Here's a nice runway that the beaver have been using to cross a road... and where they are starting to build a dam to hold back the water to build a pond.  The owners of the property want Slim to trap the beaver off of it before they destroy their road.

This is the dam that they already have started ~ in a few days the beaver could have this place flooded over.

Here's a pic of another dam at another piece of property that the beaver started.  The second picture is only one days work.  Beaver can cause a LOT of damage to a property in a short amount of time.

When we came back to this place on the second day there were even some fish caught in a shallow pool... that we fished out and put back into the deeper water.

This is a beaver chewed tree:

More dead leaves and moss shots ~ and even a few odd trees .. lol.  I know... I take pictures of the weirdest stuff.

I wish these next photos would have turned out better.  There was a mother otter with three babies swimming in this pond.  They were moving so fast it was hard to focus on them; and it was getting dark and they wouldn't stick around long enough for me to get a good shot.  When we first came up by the pond we could see the water swirling around ~ so we knew there were some otter there playing.

They came out on the bank on the far side .... not a very good pic; but you can see two of them.

 I did a black and white to see if I could focus in on them a little better:

~~~~~~~
Well... I suppose I better get off of here and go get my laundry done.  I have a ton of emails to go through and I have to check out what the facebookies are up to.  I'm so addicted!  I'll be back next week sometime if sasquatch doesn't get me.
Until next time...
So it goes in my neck of the woods.
  1. I enjoyed taking the back roads with you ~ thanks. I'm also an internet junkie ... but at least it's a way of keeping tabs on what's happening in your world.
    Watch close for sasquatch, because if they're out there - you are trodding their domain :)
  3. I hope you have a grand ol' time out bopping around in the heart of Mother Nature. It sounds wonderful to be 'unplugged' and far away from the demands & noise of modernization.
    I love the otters and the raccoon. Sweet. Boy the beavers sure do make a big mess and build grand homes to be such a wild critter. Fascinating! ;)
    I enjoyed this journey into the northern outback with you & Slim.
    Wishing you a week of enchanting views and enjoyable times.
    :)
  5. Wow, once again you amaze me with the finer things in life, like the nature pics of dead leaves and trees, more of what I, myself have been doing the past couple of days at our cabin...am hoping to cut a few boughs for a few wreaths and garland early this year...so much nicer in fair weather...and get this, I have been singing Christmas carols the past couple of days,...what's with that?
    Have a great retreat as we are
  7. Hi Mel,
    Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comment.
    Thank you as well for your pictures and sharing your vacation. It's great that you are spending such time with Mother Nature! The internet will be here forever. Unfortunately, much of what we know as nature today, won't. Don't be in too big a hurry to get back!!!
  8. Mel you're my kind of gal. You do not take weird pictures. Once I posted a picture of a cow patty with a toad stool growing out of it. The haunted house story is beautiful.
